Women ‘dominate’ the 2020 Grammy nominations

Female artists dominated most nominations for the 62nd Grammy Music Awards.

In the list published by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences on November 20, American singer Lizzo leads the way with eight nominations. Behind are two rising stars – Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X – with the same seven nominations.

Five out of eight nominees for “Album of the Year” are for female artists. Lizzo and Billie are the artists named in the four most important categories (albums, songs, recordings and new artists of the year).

Singer Lizzo leads the 2020 Grammy with eight nominations.

The 60th Grammy (2018) was controversial because only one female artist – Alessia Cara – received the award on television. Director of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences – Neil Portnow – said in a press conference women should try harder if they want to win many awards.

A year later, the event changed for the female singers Lady Gaga, Dua Lipa and Kacey Musgraves.

Some promising artists at the next Grammy are Ariana Grande and H.E.R with five nominations. Taylor Swift disappointed with only three nominations but appeared in the “Song of the Year” category for the song Lover.

Contrary to many expectations, the Korean BTS group was not nominated at the Grammy despite a successful year in the US and European markets.

The list of nominations is based on the results of votes from more than 13,000 members of the Institute – all singers, musicians and professional music producers. Important items are selected from the secret council, including members appointed by the Board of Directors.

The Grammy is an annual award held by the National Academy of Arts and Sciences, honoring artists who make outstanding contributions to the music industry. The event was first held in 1959. The 62nd Grammy Awards are scheduled to take place on January 27 in Los Angeles, USA.
